Inauguration Ceremony of CSE “Research Institute Center for Faculty Professional Development” & “First Symposium on National Faculty Professional Development” Successfully Held

On January 14 and 15, 2017, the Inauguration Ceremony of the “Research Institute Center for Faculty Professional Development” of the Chinese Society of Education (CSE) and “First Symposium on National Faculty Professional Development” were held in the High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China (RUC). The activity was sponsored by CSE, organized by the Education Work Committee of Haidian District, Beijing, Education Commission of Beijing Haidian District, and Beijing Haidian Teachers Training College, and co-organized by the High School Affiliated to RUC. Leaders and experts from the Ministry of Education (MOE), CSE, Beijing Municipal Education Commission, Beijing Education Institute, Beijing Haidian District Government, as well as the Education Work Committee, Education Commission, and Education Supervision Bureau of Haidian education system attended the conference. In addition, among the attendants wereabout 1,000 experts and representatives from 46 colleges and universities such as the University of Hong Kong (HKU), Beijing Normal University, East China Normal University, Nanjing Normal University, Capital Normal University, Tsinghua University, Peking University and Beihang University, 100 training institutes including Beijing Educations Scientific Research Institute, Beijing Institute of Education, Research Office of the Department of Education in Zhejiang Province, Shanxi Provincial Institute of Education Sciences, Tianjin Academy of Educational Science, Xiamen Academy of Educational Science, Teacher Training Institute of Xuhui District, Shanghai, and Teachers Training College of Tiedong District, Anshan City, as well as 169 primary and secondary schools and kindergartens in 26 provinces around China. They jointly witnessed the establishment of the CSE “Research Institute Center for Faculty Professional Development,” and conducted in-depth discussions themed on “Challenges and Innovation—Future-oriented Faculty Professional Development.”

Wang Dinghua, Director of the Department of Teacher Education of MOE, Cheng Jieming, Professor from HKU, Li Yi, Deputy Director of Beijing Municipal Education Commission, and Luo Bin, President of Beijing Haidian Teachers Training College, respectively delivered keynote reports on “Policies and Research on the Teaching Staff Construction in China,” “Trends and Prospects of International Faculty Professional Development,” “Reform and Innovation in Future-oriented Faculty Professional Development,” and “Regional Practice of Faculty Professional Development under the Transformation of Teaching and Research.”

The activity gathered around 1,000 research experts and representatives of research teams and practice groups in the field of faculty professional development. By exchanging ideas and cooperating with each other, they specified the direction of faculty professional development, discussed its law of development, shared their experience on it, led the faculty professional development mode, and jointly constructedthe platform for the development.

The CSE  “Research Institute Center for Faculty Professional Development” will conform to the demands on educational reform, support faculty professional development, and help the faculty to realize their vocational dreams. The major tasks of the Center are listed as follows: to study the law of faculty professional development; to research into and develop tools for the investigation and diagnosis of the faculty professional development status quo, and guide the investigation implementation, data analysis and diagnosis; to construct the curriculum planning for faculty professional development and develop models and procedures based on investigation and development demands respectively, and research into and develop curriculum evaluation tools; to innovate the faculty training mode; to systematically plan for, develop and construct faculty education resources, and perfect the faculty education resource construction mechanism and resource transformation mechanism; to develop appropriate standards for researchers’ and instructors’ professional capability, and develop research curriculums for them; and to create such brand projects as “Symposium on National Faculty Professional Development,” “Subject Research on Faculty Professional Development,” “Project of Popularizing and Leading Faculty Educational Achievements,” and “Demonstration of Backbone Faculty’s Teaching and Learning.”

By carrying out diversified academic activities, and exchanging and sharing successful experience and achievements of practical studies, the Center will strengthen in-depth exchanges and cooperation among colleges and universities for concerted implementation of research on faculty professional development featuring high quality and high level, and develop a long-term mechanism with collaborative innovation.
